Lucas Debard Wins 2015 Great American Songbook Competition

It is no secret Stardust Melodies supports the Great American Songbook. For a couple of years we've been keeping an eye on a wonderful project called the Songbook Academy (in the past known as the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition) that brings young talented artists together to sing and celebrate the great music of the past.

 

 

This year marks the sixth year, the Songbook Academy provides high school singers in grades 9-12 with the life-changing opportunity to work with music industry professionals and educators from top college arts programs to experience firsthand the uniquely American and culturally significant music known as the Great American Songbook.

 

Forty students were invited to attend the Songbook Academy at the Songbook Foundation’s headquarters in Carmel, IN, July 18-25, 2015, to participate in a seven-day Academy on interpreting and performing the music of the Great American Songbook. This year's mentors included Michael Feinstein, Tony nominee and Broadway star Laura Osnes and Grammy winner Sylvia McNair.

Lucas Debard is the 2015 winner of the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador Award. The 18-year-old is from Lebanon, Indiana. During the final concert on July 25, 2015, he sang American standards: “I'm Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” and a mash-up of “I'll See You in My Dreams” & "I Have Dreamed." As the first place winner, Debard gets the chance of a lifetime: the opportunity to perform with two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award nominated entertainer and founder of The Great American Songbook Foundation, Michael Feinstein. The winner will serve as the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador for one year and will have opportunities to perform throughout the year.

Cate Hayman of Mill Valley, California, was named Songbook Inspiration Award winner, and Hannah Vogelsang of Haslett, Michigan, was named Songbook Celebration Award winner, each receiving the opportunity to perform with Michael Feinstein.

The past Youth Ambassadors included Nick Ziobro, Julia Goodwin and last year's winner Maddie Baillio.

The Songbook Academy is a celebration of the Golden Age of American Popular music. This program is the only high school music intensive in the U.S. dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century.

Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition - nová generace a naděje americké populární hudby minulosti

Co se skrývá pod anglickým názvem Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition? Jedná se dnes již o populární soutěž pro středoškolské talentované studenty, vokalisty, kteří každoročně projdou několika regionálními výběrovými koly. Deset z nejlepších se poté účastní slavnostního finále, které probíhá v koncertním sále kulturního centra The Palladium ve městě Carmel ve státě Indiana, během kterého porotci hlasují a hodnotí jednotlivá vystoupení mladých talentů. Tři nejúspěšnější poté čeká slibná budoucnost...

Něco více nejen o vítězích minulých kol bych ráda prozradila právě v dnešním článku. Mnozí z nich se dnes věnují studiu americké populární písně, pravidelně vystupují, zpívají či plánují vydání debutového alba. A nejen to. Všichni se díky účasti v soutěžních kolech seznámili s mnohými prvotřídními zpěváky a zpěvačkami, se kterými si měli možnost také zazpívat.

1. ročník soutěže (2009):

Vítězkou se stala Julia Bonnett (více na http://www.juliabonnett.com).

2. ročník soutěže (2010):

Vítězkou se stala Annie Yokom. 

V současné době studuje Annie na universitě Carnegie Mellon. Minulý rok si zahrála v několika muzikálových produkcích, to vše na letní scéně ve městě Warsaw v Indianě; ztvárnila například roli Julie Jordan v muzikálu Carousel. Letošní rok se věnuje především studiu tance, zpěvu a plánuje natočit několik svých oblíbených skladeb. Těší se na každé setkání s kolegy ze soutěže, kterou každým rokem pravidelně sleduje.

3. ročník soutěže (2012):

Vítězem se stal Nick Ziobro (více informací na http://www.nick-ziobro.com/).

Včetně finančního ocenění získá každoročně vítěz soutěže možnost si zazpívat v newyorském jazzovém klubu zakladatele soutěže Michaela Feinsteina s názvem Feinstein's at Loews Regency. Nick byl v loňském roce také  hostem Michaela Feinsteina na jeho americkém turné.

Druhé místo obsadil náš oblíbený Tony Ponella. Rozhovor s Tonym si můžete přečíst ZDE. Tony dnes žije a studuje v New Yorku. Na třetím místě se umístila fantastická Tori Anna, která i nadále skvěle zpívá a vystupuje po celých Spojených státech.

4. ročník soutěže (2013)

Letošní vítězkou je teprve patnáctiletá Julia Goodwin z města Baldwinsville ze státu New York. Během finálového večera zazpíval dvě skladby - "Dream A Little Dream of Me” a “Feeling Good". Získala finanční odměnu v hodnotě 3,000 dolarů a možnost si zazpíval jako každý dosavadní šampion v již zmíněném jazzovém klubu v New Yorku. Julia se také stává na celý rok takzvaným "mladým ambasadorem americké populární písně", jazzové standardy a populární písně minulosti bude mít možnost v rámci různých vystoupení zpívat po celých Spojených státech.

Před samotným finálovým večerem se Julia společně s devíti finalisty účastnila týdne pěveckých kurzů, různých besed o historii americké populární hudby a dalších přednášek. Tato unikátní soutěž je ve Spojených státech jediná, která je plně věnovaná interpretaci hudby z Broadwaye, hollywoodských muzikálů a newyorské Tin Pan Alley (období 10.- 30. let 20. století).

Na druhém místě se umístila Kyrie Courter, o třetí pozici se dělí Melinda Rodriguez a Sam Pomales. K porotcům letošního ročníku patřil například zpěvák a bavič Jim Caruso, zakladatel soutěže Michael Feinstein nebo americká jazzová zpěvačka Jane Monheit.

Každoroční pěvecká soutěž je pouze jeden z mnoha projektů, které jsou součástí organizace s názvem The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Iniciate - instituce věnující se historii americké populární hudby, mladým talentům a především zachování těchto hodnot a amerických hudebních tradic.

Organizace pořádá pravidelné výstavy a expozice, které jsou přístupné veřejnosti. Mladí dobrovolníci mají možnost pracovat v archivu a knihovně, pomáhat při organizaci různých kulturních či dobročinných akcí. Další iniciativou je každoroční galavečer s názvem Songbook Hall Of Fame, během kterého se udělují různé ceny hudebním osobnostem, skladatelům a přátelům americké populární hudby minulosti.

What exactly is The Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition? A true celebration of the Golden Age of American Popular music!

Every year ten regional finalists are invited to the Feinstein Initiative’s headquarters at Palladium Concert Hall at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, IN to participate in a five-day “boot-camp” on interpreting and performing the music of the Great American Songbook.

I would like to introduce a wonderful competition, tell you more about the winners and people who are associated with such fantastic organization; people who work very hard to preserve The Great American Songbook and its future. Most of the winners continue with their education and perform around the United States. Some of them are ready to record their favorite songs. And much more. All of them have had the great oportunity to meet and study with popular vocalists who have shared their knowledge and experiences with them.

2010 Winner: Annie Yokom

Annie is going to be a junior at Carnegie Mellon university in their musical theatre BFA program. Last summer she worked at the wagon wheel theatre in Warsaw Indiana where she played multiple different roles including Julie Jordan in Carousel. This summer she has been dancing, doing gymnastics, a class at second city, working two jobs and of course singing. Annie is also hoping to start recording sometime soon and looking forward to seeing Michael, watching the competition and being surrounded by people who love the American Songbook as much as I do.

Second place winner was our favorite Tony Ponella. You can find our interview with Tony HERE (English original text is below Czech translation). Third place winner was talented Tori Anna who sang one of my favorite songs called Nature Boy. She continues to perform and tour around the United States.

Julia is the 2013 winner of the Great American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition. The 15-year-old is from Baldwinsville, New York. During the finals concert she sang two American standards: Dream A Little Dream of Me and Feeling Good.

Goodwin joined nine other high school vocalists at the week-long academy and competition, held in the Indiana city of Carmel. The annual event is sponsored by the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative and is the only U.S. competition dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century.

The second place winner, Kyrie Courter, Chicago, will receive $2000. The third place position was a tie, with winners, Sam Pomales, Springboro, Ohio, and, Melinda Rodriguez, Miami, FL, both receiving $1,500 toward continuing music education.

High School Vocal Competition is not the only event that is part of The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Iniciate. There is so much more! Songbook Hall of Fame Awards, archive and gallery where people can come and view various exhibits such as Blast from the Past: Roaring Hot '20s Jazz or previous G.I. Jive: The Music and Entertainers of World War II.

Its goals are to bring the music of the Great American Songbook to young people today and to preserve it for future generations.
